Me to We Summative
Description
The summative project is designed to teach you the skills necessary to complete a geographic inquiry and prepare you for the more complex research skills that will be required at the University or College level. More importantly, this project will focus more directly on actions you perform within our school, community and the world. It’s about processing our lives as humans, where we live and how we live and it’s affect on the people and the planet around us. It’s about recognizing the negative issues that arise from our lives and taking action to make it right. It’s about raising AWARENESS and taking ACTION.
You will complete your summative in 2 parts; Part 1: AWARENESS, Part 2: ACTION. Each part will consist of smaller stages. Please retain all work from each previous stage, because your final presentation to the class will require your previous work in order to complete it.
This is not an independent project; you are allowed to work on your projects in groups of 3, however there
will be stages that you must complete on your own and you will be evaluated separately.
Part 1: AWARENESS using the Geographic Inquiry Model
Stages
1) Stated focus of Inquiry
One of the first things we do in the course is determine the “rights” of all individuals on the planet as laid out by the United Nations. It is you’re group’s responsibility to choose one Article from the UN Declaration of Human Rights to focus on. You’re choice is based on what your group is interested in. Which article(s) does your group think is MOST important? Some groups may decide to combine certain articles due to similarities. However, once you have chosen the article(s), your group MUST complete MetoWe_Stage1Focus.doc. This will be assessed by Mr. Holmes, and must receive a satisfactory for you to move forward to Stage 2.
2) Inquiry Research and development
First, find newspaper or magazine articles on your AWARENESS focus (as selected in Stage 1). You and your group members are responsible for writing 6 article summaries (2 each) during this stage using the format and examples of summaries shown in class. Each person must complete MetoWe_Stage2Research.doc. for articles. You will also need to utilize geotechnology in your seminar which you will get a chance to use in class. You can if your group chooses to, perform a survey based on your Stage 1 Focus that can be distributed to family and friends (see MetoWe_Stage2SampleSurvey.doc to help). Combined, you and your group members will use Stage 2 to develop your argument in Stage 3.
3) Development of Argument
In this stage you and your group must use your research to develop your argument which includes a conclusion (claim) from your research (what do you think the “root” problem for this issue) and premise (evidence to prove your claim true). YOUR GROUP MUST Complete MetoWe_Stage3Argument.doc.
4) Mini-Presentation
You and your group will be present your research into the denial of one of the articles in the UN Declaration of Human Rights to the Grade 10 Civics class. You will only have 5 minutes and you will need to do the following; outline the article from the UN declaration of Human Rights that you are addressing.
Indicate the areas of they planet where injustices are taking place and explain the situations taking place briefly. Include your argument about the issue (from Stage 3) Complete MetoWe_Stage4_Project.doc
Rubric used for evaluation of Mini-Presentation. MetoWE_Minipresent_rubric.doc
Part 2: ACTION using the Experiential Model
Stages
1) Learn from the life of an Activist
Before your group develops an action to perform, you must review the life of an activist by viewing a film based on their lives. Here is a list, but you may choose your own as well.
1) Ghandi (Mohatma Ghandi) 2) Eco-Pirate (Paul Watson)
3) Taking Root (Wangari Maathai) 4) Super-Size Me (Morgan Spurlock)
5) Garbage Warrior (Michael Reynolds) 6) Che (Che Guevara)
7) Malcom X (Malcom X) 8) Hotel Rwanda (Paul Rusesabagina)
9) The Rosa Parks Story (Rosa Parks) 10) Freedom Writers (Erin Gruwell)

15) The Burning Season (Chico Mendes) 16) Gorillas in the Mist (Diane Fossey)
17) One Small Act 18) Blind Mountain
19) The Clean Bin Project
While watching the movie, you must complete the following as a group MetoWe_Action_Movie.doc and you must be prepared to share your results in your final presentation.
2) EXPERIENCE: Me to We Project
This is the fun part. It’s time to act on some of the things that you have learned. You are required to come up with a “ME to WE” project by finding ways to reach out to others in our school, our community, and our world to have an impact, to bring about good in the lives of others. (See the Living ME to We sections at the end of each chapter for ideas). Your project may be connected with Part 1, and the articles within the UN Declaration of Human Rights that you investigated, or it maybe separate.
Your project must fall within the following criteria;
i) must be aimed at improving the life of another person, or people.
ii) You must clearly identify the need for this project.
iii) It can involve an organization (ask Holmes) or you can develop your own project.
Contact the KW volunteer action centre for volunteer ideas. http://www.volunteerkw.ca/ VOLUNTEERING SHOULD BEGIN BY THE BEGINNING OF DECEMBER
3) REFLECT: Final presentation (SUMMATIVE worth 20% of final mark)
In you final presentation you will share the results of your mini-presentation and awareness raising, and your Me to We Project. Your final presentation will be 30 minutes and must:
a) capture the interest of the audience; and INVOLVE them if possible.
b) present your mini-presentation to the class. At the conclusion of this, you must reflect on the
c) effectiveness of your mini-presentation. Refer to REFLECTION lesson.
d) present your “Learn from the life of an Activist” Use answers from MetoWe_Action_Movie.doc to guide you here.
e) present your “Me to We Project” and answer the following;
f) What did you do and why? What did you hope to accomplish with your
project? How does your project embody the Me to We Philosophy? (provide page references/examples from the book that show a clear connection to your project)
g) When performing your action, which chapter (s) and/or ideas within the Me to We philosophy do you think were most important? Did your project meet/exceed/fail your expectations? If you
could do it over again, what would you do differently?
h) FINALLY, define what ME to WE (other-centred living) means to you.
i) Include a proper Bibliography (min. 10 sources) in APA format for all resources used
